Abstract
The University of Michigan's Scholarly Publishing Office was formed in 2001 with the goal of developing low-cost, scalable mechanisms for electronic publication and distribution of journals, monographs and other digital scholarly content. It currently supports over 40 publications and digital projects, large and small scale. Maria Bonn, Director of SPO, will reflect on the maturing publishing process at SPO as it moves from being an experimental model to an established publisher. The presentation will have a particular focus on defining the roles of a traditional publisher and interrogating how becoming a publisher transforms the nature of publishing.
